INFORMATIONAL MEETING/MEET THE CANDIDATES NIGHT
February 23, 2016
Moderator Paul Blais opened this year’s Halifax Selectboard/School Board joint informational meeting and meet the candidates night at 7:00 p.m. February 28th in the Halifax School multipurpose room. Selectboard members Lewis Sumner, Mitchell Green, and Bradley Rafus, and School Board members Homer (Chum) Sumner, Paul Blais, and Kim Tefft were present. Approximately 25-30 members of the public were in attendance.
Candidates for town offices, several of whom will appear on the ballot for more than one position, introduced themselves and responded to questions from the floor. Candidates are as follows: For Town Moderator, School Moderator, and School Board, Paul Blais; for Selectboard (three years), Cara Cheyette and Lewis Sumner; for Town Clerk and Town Treasurer, Patricia Dow; for Lister (three years), and Town Agent (one year), Tina Blais; for Collector of Delinquent Taxes (one year), Laura Sumner; for Town Grand Juror, Joseph Tamburrino; for Trustee of Public Funds, Howard H. Smith. Also on the ballot, but not present this evening: For Cemetery Commissioner (three years), Clifton Inman; for Auditor (three years), Sarah Barnett.
Candidates answered various questions, and spoke about their municipal experience and vision for the town. Other topics eliciting questions and comments included changes to recycling, PFC testing, and the FY18 budget. School Board members shared information on the Act 46 proceedings, and invited interested citizens to attend informational meetings and visit the Windham Southwest Supervisory Union web site (http://www.windhamsw.k12.vt.us) to learn more about Act 46.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:00 p.m.
