Folks,
We are expecting a major winter storm Sunday into Monday. Our Highway crew has been working with very few breaks for weeks now, so here are some gentle reminders:
Halifax’s winter road policy is here https://halifaxvt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Winter-Roads-Maintenance-Plan-and-Policy.pdf. Giving the timing of this storm, you should, per the policy, NOT EXPECT plowing overnight (10 PM-4 AM). Our highway supervisor will determine if our crew would best rest and get an early jump on things Monday morning. Plan ahead and stay with a friend or closer to work if you have a night shift, postpone or change non-essential travel and appointments now (I did!), and please be sure your vehicles are not parked in the way of the plow. During clean up–do not plow or blow snow from your driveway onto town highways and remember that snow removal is hard on our bodies, especially the heart. Call 911 if you need emergency help, such as medical, police, or fire response. Report downed lines, trees on lines, and power outages directly to Green Mountain Power at 1-888-835-4672.
Would You Need Help in a Disaster? Please sign up for CARE (Citizens Assistance Registry for Emergencies): https://e911.vermont.gov/care We did a drill this summer and no one in Halifax was signed up for this, which worries me. Let’s say you don’t have a car or require medical oxygen. Don’t assume town leaders and emergency personnel know this, or have contact information for you.
So…Watch the weather and hunker down. Stay warm Friday into Saturday. Stay home Sunday into Monday. Be safe.
